Mekong Tourism Forum Risks Legitimizing Military Rule in Myanmar

Can an international tourism event be viewed independently of the political and humanitarian situation on the ground?

We are proud to share a guest column by one of GSM’s Board Members, Dr.Andrea Valentin, published in The Irrawaddy, on the upcoming Mekong Tourism Forum and the ethical questions surrounding the hosting of an international tourism event in Myanmar amid the country’s ongoing political and humanitarian crisis.

As the author writes:

“In today’s Myanmar, the slogan raises more questions than it answers. This is tourism-washing in the midst of conflict. The article reflects on the responsibilities that come with international engagement and to ensure that the voices and lived experiences of the people of Myanmar are not overlooked.

Dr. Andrea Valentin, a current GSM Board Member, spent years working in Myanmar’s tourism sector, where she promoted responsible tourism and contributed to key policy discussions during the country’s period of political opening.
